Fire department divers searched Sand Lake on Wednesday for a missing man whose canoe flipped but were unable to find a sign of him by the end of the day. Kody King, 26, was considered missing and presumed dead after a canoe he was fishing in with a friend flipped at about 2 a.m. The companion swam to shore and called for help.

Neither man was wearing a life jacket, and alcohol appeared to have been a factor, according to the Anchorage Fire Department.

Divers searched the lake without success for about an hour after the 911 call, and a shoreline search also didn't turn up evidence that King had made it out of the lake, law enforcement officials said.

The search, involving more than 10 divers and several cadaver dogs, resumed after daylight and continued through the afternoon. Searchers ended their efforts in the evening without finding a sign of King's body and planned to resume looking at 10 a.m. today, according to the fire department.

The fire department on Thursday afternoon found the body of a man who fell into Sand Lake a day earlier.

The body of Kody King, 26, was found about 3:40 p.m. under 40 feet of water, Battalion Chief Bridget Bushue said.

The Alaska Air National Guard aided the search with the use of its sonar, which picked out a shape at the bottom of the lake.

Fire department divers found King's body in the area where a canoe he was in overturned; officials found a car jack attached to a rope the men had been using as an anchor nearby as well, she said.

King had been fishing with a friend about 2 a.m. Wednesday when their canoe overturned. The companion swam to shore and called for help.

Firefighters say neither man was wearing a life jacket and that alcohol was involved.
